Two of those exhibition pavilions were joined and reworked, so the public levels run through both. Restaurants of several kinds are placed across those levels, together with a cabaret hall used for live programmes and rooms let for meetings. Circulation follows the original ramps and voids of the pavilions, which were never designed as a single building.
The setting
Île Notre-Dame is an artificial island in the St Lawrence, built for the exhibition and now carrying parkland, a rowing basin and a motor racing circuit. Bridges connect it to the city and to the south shore. The park around the complex is open, flat and planted, with water on every side.
Before you write
Ask how the island is reached at the hour you arrive, since the metro, the shuttle and the bridges do not all run to the same timetable. It is worth confirming which restaurants and halls are open on your dates, as programmes are seasonal. Parking arrangements on the island change during events, so check them.
Fallsview Casino Resort
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Fallsview is built into the slope above the Niagara gorge, so its floors step down the hillside and its public rooms look towards the falls. The complex holds a hotel tower, a theatre used for concerts, a spa, shops and a run of restaurants. Walkways and a moving link connect it to the streets above. The building opened at the start of this century.

A concert theatre with fixed seating occupies one part of the lower levels, with the spa, the shopping arcade and the restaurants arranged around the main circulation. The setting
The gorge and the falls lie below the site, and the park along the rim runs between them and the building. Behind, the town rises in a grid of streets, hotels and attractions. The river crossing to New York State is a short distance downstream, and the rail station sits north of the centre.

Confirm what is running on your dates, because the theatre programme, the spa hours and some restaurants change through the year. Ask which walkway or lift connects to the street level you will arrive at. Winter weather in the gorge affects the park paths, and parking is charged separately, so ask about both.
River Rock Casino Resort

River Rock stands on the bank of the north arm of the Fraser in Richmond, a short distance from Vancouver airport. The complex holds two hotel buildings, a large show theatre, a spa, meeting rooms and a group of restaurants. A marina and a walkway lie along the water beside it. Rail from the city centre stops a short walk away.

Richmond is flat, low and laid out on drained land in the Fraser delta. The river runs immediately north of the site, with a marina and a public path along the bank. The airport lies to the west, the Vancouver city centre north across the water, and the rail line runs past the property.

Ask which of the two hotel buildings your room is in, since they differ and the walk between them is not short. Confirm the theatre programme and the spa hours for your dates. If you are arriving by air, ask about the shuttle and about how late the rail line runs into the evening.
